If you have a wooden fence, you will know how much mildew, moss and mold accumulates on it over time. You have to clean your fence regularly in order to stop the moss and mildew from building up. You do have to make sure that you don’t use any products that can damage the environment or plants. Luckily, you can use a few different techniques to get a clean fence without killing any plants. Do test each of the solutions on a small section of your garden first, since some plants may not like all of them.
If you can, just a scrub brush, a pressure washer and a bit of water. However, make sure the PSI on your pressure washer isn’t set too high, since that could damage the fence. Most people find that electric pressure washers are less damaging than gas washers. If you only have a gas one, test it on a small fence section first. You can add a bit of vinegar to the water if it isn’t sufficient to clean the fence. Let this steep into the moss for about 15 minutes. Simply scrub the moss and mildew off afterwards. Baking soda works just as well as vinegar. If you do find that this is insufficient, try a pre-made solution but make sure it is a green one. Do make sure you test on a small piece of fence, just in case it really causes damage. Do not use this type of solution near any plants.
Do take a look at some online information on cleaning wooden fences as well. Not only can you learn what works here, you can also find out what absolutely doesn’t work. Make sure you visit garden centers, hardware stores and other such places to find various solutions if you need them. Check what the ingredients are and do some research online on any chemicals in there that you don’t recognize. There are many cleaning products out there that are incredibly effective in terms of removing moss and mildew, but they will also kill all surrounding plants, damage the earth and contaminate ground water. You do have the option of going for a completely green solution, but you will generally pay quite a lot more for those. On the other hand, we are responsible for making sure we still have an earth to live on, so if you do find that vinegar and baking soda don’t cute it, you may just have to dig deep and spend a bit more than you had hoped for. Luckily, most of the time, vinegar and baking soda will be more than enough.
